Introduction

It is my sincere desire to relate to you the dangers and sometimes joy of being an officer on the front lines of law enforcement in the wild. After all these years, I retired in 1992.  When I feel a cool autumn breeze the memories of years past, flood thru my mind.  I live these stories over and over in my mind.  When I see the Golden Rods blooming I have a strong, almost overwhelming desire, to return to the woods.  In my heart I will always be a game warden and have a love for the outdoors and wildlife.  I sincerely want to thank God. Without his divine protection in my complete life, I would have never got to where I am now.  As I look back thru the years, I can see the unseen hand at work.  The stories in this book are true.  They are not accurate as to each word and statement made by myself and others, but over all they are true to the best of my ability to remember.  The facts are true.  I purposely omitted names to protect the innocent and guilty.  This book is not about them.  It's about what God has done in my life.  To God Be the Glory.

Mississippi Wildlife Federation, 28th Annual Conservation Achievement Awards Program, held July 31, 1987 at the Coliseum Ramada Inn in Jackson. Conservation Educator of the Year - Hugh C. Davis, Jr.
Hugh Davis has been a conservation officer for the past nine years.  As
such, he is very involved in working with adults and children alike to teach
them an appreciation for our state's wildlife resources.  During the past
year his commitment and leadership resulted in 1,713 students being taught
hunter education in Lauderdale County - the most students certified by a
county since MDWC began holding classes.  Hugh was directly responsible for teaching most of the students, and he also coordinated the activities of other conservation officers who helped with teaching and firing programs.  Mr. Davis' involvement did not stop there, however.  He worked with the hunter education coordinator to develop a relationship with the Lauderdale County and Meridian School Boards to adopt hunter education as part of the curriculum.  He also worked with the local television stations and newspapers to ensure that the public was made aware of the hunter education program.
Hugh is one of the few Coast Guard certified instructors for boating safety
in the Department and is active in training volunteer instructors for the
program.  To date, Lauderdale County has certified 2,473 students in boating safety, largely because of Hugh's efforts.  Always a strong supporter of the deer management program, Mr. Davis works hard to assist clubs and landowners.  This includes helping them make contact with the district biologist for management assistance and helping farmers with deer depredation problems.
All these achievements have been accomplished in addition to doing an
outstanding job at his regular enforcement duties.  Hugh Davis is dedicated
and committed to teaching Mississippians about the importance of hunter
safety and ethics and giving them a deeper appreciation for wildlife.  We
are proud to name him the 1987 Conservation Educator of the Year.
